Where the Name Came From, and Where It Took Us

The name Cloud Picker was born in Asia.

Years ago, we made the journey to a coffee farm perched on the mountain border of Myanmar and Thailand. We drove hours by jeep - steep hills, bumpy roads, mist closing in around us. The higher we climbed, the further we went up through the clouds. And at the top, we met the coffee pickers. That moment became our name.

So when World of Coffee Asia came to Bangkok this May, it felt less like a trade show trip and more like a homecoming.

Co-directors - Peter and Frank boarded a flight from Dublin with Andrew and Dustin and landed in one of the world's great megacities, carrying five coffees and a lot of pride. Let us tell you about:

World of Coffee: Asia (Bangkok)

The Stand

We brought coffees that represent what Cloud Picker does best - a showcase of origin, process and our own perception of what a bean can become.

The reactions told us everything we needed to know. People would stop at our stand, curious about where we were from: "Dublin, Ireland, yes, really" - and some were genuinely stunned at the distance we'd travelled. Others already knew us. Subscribers to guest roaster businesses in the region had tasted us, cafés sourcing our beans, people who had tasted Cloud Picker before and came looking for us. The moment someone tries one of our coffees for the first time and their face changes...that never gets old.

The best sign highlighting people are enjoying your offering is when someone comes over to your stand because a friend told then they need to sample our coffee. Word of mouth is still the best endorsement of a brands quality!

What We Saw

World of Coffee Asia was alive in a way that's hard to fully put into words. Roasters from all over the world, sharing the thing they've given their lives to. People from every background, every origin, every process - all carrying the same energy. Pure passion for the dark arts of coffee consumption.

What struck us most was how the conversation had evolved. Guests weren't just interested in where a coffee was from. They wanted to understand the roaster's interpretation of it. The perception. The art. It felt less like a trade show and more like a gallery opening, where the medium happened to be coffee.

Asia's commitment to specialty coffee is undeniable. It's not coming, it's already here. The growth, the quality, the seriousness of vendors and customers alike. The region is now a major force in this industry and being present, being part of that moment, really mattered us.

Bangkok Itself

The city mirrored everything we felt inside the expo. Bangkok moves with the same energy, every small café with a considered name and a considered design, street food stands earning Michelin recognition, people living loud and well. Work exists there, but it feels like work that is genuinely enjoyed. It reminded us why we got into this.

What We Brought Home

New relationships. New markets. Renewed determination that the coffees we're roasting in Dublin belong on the world stage.

Cloud Picker started with a name presented to us at the top of a mountain in this part of the world. Bangkok reminded us that the story is still being written and that the best chapters may still be ahead.
