Single Origin vs Blend: Why We Refuse to Pick a Side
Ask a room full of coffee people which is better, single origin or blend, and you’ll get a lively debate. Ask us, and you’ll get a shrug and a smile. We make both, we love both, and we’ll tell you why. First, the basics.
What Is Single Origin Coffee?
Single origin means the coffee comes from one place: one farm, one region, nothing mixed in.
That’s its charm. A single origin is a snapshot of where and how it was grown, from the altitude and the soil to the way the producer handled it after picking. It’s traceable, often seasonal, and it can taste distinctly different from one harvest to the next.
Take our most recent, Finca La Lindosa, Huila. It went through 235 hours of fermentation, which is a long time, and it brings a whole lot of character to the cup. That’s what single origin does best: it lets one place and one set of decisions speak for themselves.
What Is a Coffee Blend?
A blend brings two or more origins together. Each one is chosen for what it adds, so the finished coffee is more balanced than any one of them on its own.
Think of it like a good band. One origin might bring body, another sweetness, another a bit of brightness. Together they make something rounder and more consistent, the kind of cup you can reach for again and again.
Henry is our example, and one of our all-time favourites. It’s a blend built for exactly that: balance and comfort.
So, Which One Should You Choose?
Honestly? We can’t pick either. That’s why we make both.
> Reach for a single origin when you’re feeling curious, want to taste a specific place, or like the idea that your coffee has a story and an address.
> Reach for a blend when you want something balanced and reliable, the coffee you’ll happily drink every morning.
Neither is better, and they just do different jobs. Plenty of our customers keep one of each in the cupboard and pick depending on the day.
Both, Please! One comes from a single place, with all the character that brings. The other brings origins together for balance. We love both, refuse to choose, and reckon you don’t have to either.
