This coffee has a rich sweetness and sparkling acidity, with the classic redcurrant and tropical fruit flavours of the very best Rwandan coffees. Bright and clean as a filter or syrupy and tangy as espresso, the intense fruit flavours will shine either way.
Remera is a washing station near the city of Gikongoro, in the Nyamagabe District of Rwanda. Set up by Buf Café in 2003, Remera has been noted for its quality ever since, winning numerous Cup of Excellence and other awards.
This lot was dry fermented, washed, then dried on raised beds under shade, which allows it to dry more slowly, over 4 to 5 weeks rather than 2 to 3 weeks in the sun. This means the coffee dries more evenly, making for great transparency of flavour.
Buf Café is still owned by founder Epiphanie Mukashyaka and her family, and has grown to include a dry mill and two washing stations, with plans for two more. Buf now buys cherry from around 7000 smallholder farmers, giving them access to the higher and more stable prices of the speciality market. Buf also creates employment and infrastructure to the area, including electricity and water. Since its foundation, Buf has had an enviable reputation for quality of processing and continues to attract the best cherry grown in the region through the premiums it can pay for high quality lots.
