It's five years since we had our last coffee in stock from Myanmar.  It's been an incredibly turbulent and challenging time for the Burmese people in the intervening years and we've been keen to get some coffee back in to showcase what this country can produce in the face of such adversity.

This coffee is once again from Southern Shan and, as last time, it is collected and processed by the Mandalay Coffee Group.  There are 16 smallholder farmers, predominantly of the Danu and Pa-O hill tribes, contributing to this coffee and they all work around the mountainous Ywangan area.

The average area cultivated by farmers working with this group is 0.25-3 acres of land.  In addition to coffee, there are a variety of plants intercropped including papaya, jackfruit, macadamia and djenkol beans.  These give the coffee plants all the benefits of shade growing and also slow the spread of leaf rust.

48 hours after picking, this coffee is hand-sorted and then transported just across the state border to the processing mill in Pyin Oo Lwin, Mandalay.  It is floated, pulped and fermented in tiled tanks overnight, then rinsed of mucilage.  Following this, the coffee is dried on concrete patios for seven to ten days.
